Life should be interesting! Do you agree as well? There are times in life when things happen that you will remember forever...
It all started by chance when a blueberry order was unexpectedly canceled by a customer. It was the year 2016. From those blueberries, our first blueberry wine was born – beautifully red in color and pleasantly dry. It was a big surprise for us, as it turned out that it's possible to make tasty blueberry wine. Fueled by enthusiasm, the next batch was started, using up all the blueberry reserves from the freezer. Today, our wines have become an essential part of every family gathering and different celebrations.
After both successful and not-so-successful wine experiments, we took the next big step forward several years later. We experimented with different blueberry wines for the Metsa talu winemaker's 50th year jubilee. During a blind tasting at the event, wine #3 overwhelmingly became the favorite among all the guests. This wine became our first blueberry wine registered in the alcohol registry – Rooswald Red Jubileum. We are also part of the Estonian winetrail.
We use cultivated blueberries harvested from our farm’s own plantation to make wines. Our wines are crafted under our winemaker, who skillfully combines the unique taste of our cultivated blueberries with exciting new additions while using various production methods. Each vintage features different blueberry wines. Continuous experimentation brings us joy and helps us to discover new tastes. Since our winemaker is a pharmacist by profession, all the wines have Latin-inspired names – Rooswald Red Jubileum, Rooswald Red Querqus, and Rooswald Red Aurum.
The family name Rooswald was used in the family from the late 18th century until it was Estonianized in the first half of the 20th century. The history of Metsa Farm dates back to 1986, and our family is a pioneer of cultivated blueberry farming in Estonia (read more here). By the way, Estonia’s first cultivated blueberry variety, "Are," was named after the first name of our farm’s owner!
We welcome you to Metsa Farm (contacts and location) during the summer to taste our wines and stroll through our historic blueberry plantation. Please book your visit in advance so we can give you our full attention and share the story of Rooswald Red blueberry wines.
